if you need a 2 CD avi file (-usesbr 5 or -usesbr 1400) and the video must have the original resolution,  use -encode 3:2:2 if you care about speed or -encode 3:4:2 if you care more about quality. This is not the best choice for a satisfactory PSNR. It is better to scale the video. See below.

Comments

reducing the resolution of the video increases the PSNR and reduces the processing time necessary, especially for -encode 3:4:2. The optimum combination is usually -encode 3:4:2 -setaspect 4, but if the resulting avi has a file size smaller than the one choosen with -usesbr, the PSNR doesn't increase due to the reduced resolution. In that case -setaspect 3 is more appropriate.
